The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) demands better means for wiretapping internet users, according to FBI chief of legal department Valerie Caproni. As she sais, eavesdropping peer-to-peer communication, web mail and social networks is very difficult for the FBI. Although technology would allow to do professional eavesdropping, internet providers are not equipped with the required technology infrastructure today. Intercepting phone calls is much easier than doing investigation on the internet, she sais.
Well, from my point of view, I am very happy, that the secret services encounter these problems. Hopyfully, cryptographic methods will stay strong enough to resist government eavesdropping techniques.
What do we learn from this? Always encrypt your private stuff, do not send data in plaint text over the internet. Use encryption to protect your data – always.
